After leaving Crater Lake, we headed West out of Oregon and entered into California near Crescent City, just outside the Redwood National Forest. We stayed at an RV park just outside the Redwood park. We drive into the park and went on hikes to see some of the oldest trees in the country -- some oveer 300 feet tall. It was a beautiful day and we thoroughly enjoyed walking around and through these giant trees. All the while, I keep thinking of Joyce Kilmer's poem "Trees".
I THINK that I shall never see
A poem lovely as a tree.
A tree whose hungry mouth is prest
Against the sweet earth's flowing breast;
A tree that looks at God all day,
And lifts her leafy arms to pray;
A tree that may in summer wear
A nest of robins in her hair;
Upon whose bosom snow has lain;
Who intimately lives with rain.
Poems are made by fools like me,
But only God can make a tree.
After spending a few days in the Redwood Forest, we headed South towards Santa Cruz.
We drove South to Leggett, CA and then West to the ocean. the road we picked (CA Route 1 -), the shoreline highway was a hell of a road, very narrow with switchbacks and always climbing up the mountain for 15 minles and then for down for the next 15 miles with again lots of switchbacks. It reminded us of to the Mount Washington Auto road.
Along the way, we stopped over for a camp night at Westport Union State Beach. Was very cool parking along the beach enjoying the air and crashing waves. We just picked out a spot and then they use the honor system to pay for our stay.
Was somewhat cloudy/foggy when we parked the rig, but cleared up enough for a beautiful sunset.
In the morning we resumed our trek to Santa Cruz traveling on US 101 South and ended up going over the Golden Gate Bridge and downtown through San Francisco. This was another interesting drive through heavy downtown traffic. I think I prefer the scary ride through Crater Lake!
